Board Training Philosophy

The primary role of the board of directors of a community association is to support and ensure fidelity to the association and to carry out the duties of the board as stated in the Association’s bylaws. As a board member, you are responsible for representing the needs of the entire community and must always approach each decision with the best interest of the community, as a whole, in mind. In order to successfully fulfill this assignment, PCM provides a comprehensive training program for board members.

This training covers the following:

  • What is an Association and How is it Governed?
  • What are 4 Types of Common Interest Developments or CIDs.
  • Role of the Board of Directors
  • Duties of the Board of Directors
  • Role of the Community Manager
  • Articles of Incorporation
  • Bylaws
  • CC&Rs
  • Rules and Regulations
  • California Civil Code
  • California Corporations Code

Fiduciary Duties of Board Members

Key to our training is communicating to officers and directors in a community association that they are volunteers with a big job. The primary duty of each board member is that of a fiduciary or a trust. Throughout our training we provide clarity and understanding of this important responsibility

But just as the law sets high standards for board member conduct it also rewards directors who follow this high standard of conduct by shielding them from liability for alleged failures to meet their obligations as directors. This is called the Business Judgment Rule and our training helps board members understand how this law applies to them.

Successful Meetings

In order to accomplish your goals it takes a dedicated team of people who can actively exchange ideas and effectively come to conclusions. In order for your meetings to be the most successful, we train board members on how to properly organize and conduct meetings. This includes a complete understanding of parliamentary procedures.

Learning the Language of CIDs

Common Interest Developments have a language all their own. Sometimes it can become very daunting and confusing for a new board member to assimilate these new terms. We help new board members through this transition by providing training on the specific terms used in managing a successful homeowners association.
